While Beauty Directory's Star Awards are akin to the Golden Globes, the Fragrance Foundation's Jasmine Awards, which celebrate 10 years in the business in 2012, are the Oscars of Australian beauty journalism. The coveted Jasmine Award for Journalistic Excellence comes with a British Airways business-class, five-star trip to Paris. This year's winner was Victoria Meppem of InStyle for her 'InStyle Fragrance Awards' spread.
"It's such a wonderful acknowledgement of the work that goes into the InStyle Fragrance Awards from calling in a year's worth of fragrance releases, to selecting a judging panel, coming up with a visual concept and then writing the story, all in the quest to bring fragrance alive for the reader," said Ms Meppem.
There were also six category winners, pictured above, who each awarded a $1,000 cheque, a bottle of champagne and perpetual trophy: Nikki Parkinson of Styling You for Best Blog on Fragrance; Melinda Cornford of vogue.com.au for Best Online Feature on Fragrance; Luke Benedictus of Men's Health for Best Practical Guide to Fragrance; Grazia's Tracey Withers for Best Short Feature on Fragrance'; Sunday magazine's Suzanne Wangmann for Best In-Depth Feature on Fragrance; and Meppem for Best Visual Story on Fragrance.
There were 70 entries in total this year, including 19 submissions from new journalists, with beauty editors, writers and bloggers submitting their best pages for consideration by the judging panel, which included news presenter Natarsha Belling; fashion and lifestyle commentator Melissa Hoyer; fragrance evalutor Erica Moore; Rebecca Link, senior buyer beauty for designer brands & fragrance at David Jones; and Jackie Maxted, founder and CEO of beautydirectory.com.au.
The awards are designed to promote the fragrance industry, part of the $6 billion+ Australian cosmetics, perfume and toiletries sector, but more particularly to deter consumers from purchasing counterfeit and gray-market product. It takes skill and creativity to put a fresh spin on scent, so congratulations to all the winners.
