Such an interesting point. If I may include a shameless plug, I've also blogged today about Paper Giants and how, in my experience, magland today is nothing like it was in Ita's time. Women in the industry just don't seem to be anywhere near as supportive of each other as they were in the early days of mags like Cleo, when everyone was working together and really believed they were making a difference. Le sigh.
I agree with Georgie and Laura. Walking through the halls of Park Street, you don't get a sense of inspiration that women are doing an amazing job of representing their readers, you get a sense of single-minded careerism.
Well, as long as we're jumping on the shameless plug bandwagon ;), let me include a link to my post on the miniseries: http://earlybirdcatchestheworm.wordpress.com/2011/04/26/paper-giants–the-birth-of-cleo-review/
Girl With a Satchel unpacks culture, faith, feminism and media in an effort to elucidate all that's good and right and true while dipping our toes into what's lovely, inspiring and praiseworthy, too. We don't always get it right but we have a duty to try. And we are always pleased to meet you.
