Erica Bartle, editor
Raised on a steady diet of Young Talent Time, Judy Blume books and Dolly magazine, Bartle infuses her work with personal insights on body image, eating disorders and "girl stuff" in the hope of shining a light on those aspects of popular culture, and accepted glossy magazine practises, that conflict with the better interests of women.
She has a Bachelor of Media degree (Macquarie University), teaches feature writing and fashion and style journalism at the Queensland University of Technology, has appeared at the Sydney Writer's Festival and hosted a blogging workshop for the Queensland Writer's Centre.
Her editorial credits include performing deputy editor duties on teen title Girlfriend as well as writing for Total Girl, Cleo, Cosmopolitan, The Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Life, Eternity newspaper and The Walkley Magazine. She has been editing Girl With a Satchel since 2007.
Sophie Baker, photojournalist/designer
Sophie Baker is a photojournalism graduate (Griffith University) who has been on the Girl With a Satchel team since 2009.
She has studied Japanese and dance, but her greatest love is for the camera. Five years ago she picked up a DSLR for the first time and never looked back, winning awards for her stunning photography. You can find her blog at sophiebakerphotography.com
She has lived on Tamborine Mountain her whole life and has ventured extensively abroad, taking in the likes of Fiji, Singapore, Thailand, Greece, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Portugal and Japan. "I love immersing myself in and learning about different cultures," she says.
Emma Plant, senior writer
God was feeling generous when he dished out Emma Plant's talents. The writer/photojournalist/makeup artist and art teacher knows how to style an outfit, work a smokey eye and makes us laugh, too.
Emma has a Bachelor of Communications (Writing & Photojournalism) and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary), and her work has appeared in Frankie, Yen, Good Health and the Gold Coast Bulletin. She was once featured as a Girlfriend magazine 'Role Model' for her humanitarian work overseas.
Julia Low, writer
Hailing from Malaysia, Julia has a dry sense of humour and a deep love for God. The University of Queensland journalism and mass communication major blogs beautifully at This Daisy.
She was the cheerleading captain for her high school senior squad and on the events team for Calvary Youth Ministries. Hyper-organised and always on-task, she contributes to Girl With a Satchel's 'Digital Gloss Files' as well as penning feature stories.
Georgie Carroll, junior writer
Teen blogger Georgie Carroll is Year Twelve student currently studying Advanced and Extension English (hence, pretty handy with words), as well as French (hence, bilingual smarty-pants) who began her blog ‘Frangipani Princess’ shortly after her 13th birthday in 2007.
She has been featured in Dolly, Girlfriend and Disney Adventures magazines and has completed numerous weeks of work experience at Girlfriend and Dolly (highlights in her fledgling career).
She loves everything to do with Disney, Harry Potter, Team Starkid and magazines, and has completed a six-month exchange program in France. After completing her HSC, she hopes to study a Bachelor of Media/Communications at the University of Sydney with aspirations to eventually edit a teen magazine.
Jenny Keates, creative director
A talented fashion and graphic designer who has worked with surf label Mambo, Jenny Keates is also the mother to two adorable children, Indah and Lennox, whom she shares a home – and her husband – with on Sydney's northern beaches.
Jenny is responsible for Girl With a Satchel's visual branding and is the creator of The Love Nest, a bespoke stationery label offering lovingly tailored finishes on wedding invitations using beautiful stock and trims (handprinted fabric, a textured paper, a pretty ribbon).
Girl With a Satchel Graduates
Liz Burke
Liz Burke – the girl behind the blog's weekly summary of news and current affairs, The Burke Report and more satirical posts – has Bachelor of Journalism and Bachelor of Business (QUT) and has written for The Courier Mail, The Sunday Mail and ABC News Online.
Liz was the online features editor for the 2010 edition of Frock Paper Scissors and never learned to ride a bike. She was rightfully snapped up by Australia's highest selling magazine, The Australian Women's Weekly, in 2011 and is now PA to editor-in-chief Helen McCabe.
Ellen-Maree Elliot
"Slightly too polite to people who are rude to her" and "a little bit nosey", Ellen-Maree brought a touch of humour and humanity to Girl With a Satchel with posts on girl-related matters such as 'For the love of Dove'.
A QUT Journalism graduate, she is currently a clerical assistant at NewsQueensland, which is compatible with both her affection for award-winning journalist Trent Dalton and position as the eldest child in her large family.
Her dream job is inheriting Richard Fidler's 'Conversations Hour' while simultaneously writing for a myriad of her favourite print and online publications, or working for the U.N. Her most beloved possessions are her books, particularly those penned by C.S. Lewis and Phillip Pullman.
