I don't really think Jennifer Hawkins' body is the issue, but if she's happy to be the medium through which this message is aired and shared, good on her. And honestly, I don't think young women with body issue problems are the audience, it's the people working with young women who get the benefit of the debate. As a Girl Guide leader, I can hold up Marie Claire and our Jen to young women working with women and bring the issue to their attention - and will be doing just that in two weekends time when I do a media training with Girl Guides aged 18-30 from across Australia. These women are change makers and I'm keen to hear their opinion. As part of the Marie Claire demographic, I think their comments will be interesting, and I dare say will not be about whether Jen's body is a good example of the body image debate. Rather I think they will all say as leaders in the movement, or people working with young women 5-18 there will be a discussion on how much younger our members are aware of their own body image. I am a Guide leader of girls 10-14 and I note, with some alarm, the younger members who come into my unit with manicures, makeup, tight and short skirts, midriffs showing. They're 10. Thankfully, in my unit, we tend to get outdoors and messy and even the fussiest of kid joins in and by the time they go home I am apologising to parents about the state of their casual uniform, reminding everyone, of course, that that's what the uniform is for - no mess, no progress. I take great pride in helping girls shed their body image hangups and just hang out with other girls doing things they might never do in any other environment - silly or challenging and sometimes silly AND challenging. If readers have not acquainted themselves with an organisation doing positive things for young women, please do Google your state association to learn more about our adventures. And, I'd be thrilled to learn our Jen was once a Girl Guide. I think her active, adventurous spirit suits our image well. Happy 100 years to any Girl Guides reading this post.Kate Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11731006032499344619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2042413869472011551.post-59120863856124516132010-01-12T12:36:57.523+11:002010-01-12T12:36:57.523+11:00any article, reference, conversation or mention of...any article, reference, conversation or mention of 'real' women is a complete and utter turn off to me.
I believe all women are real - I don't care what the reference is to this... What concerns me is that:

(1) MC have not applied the same ‘real’ code to advertisers. So, in the pages surrounding Jen’s shoot, we’ll still see pages of flawless beauties in the rest of the mag.

(2)Yes, Jen has not been retouched but what Jackie Frank fails to reveal is that Jen would have undergone several hours of styling with heavy make-up. Not to mention the hours involved in lighting the shoot and the hundreds of photos that were taken – to get one cover shot. That’s why I think this stunt could do more harm than good – consumers are not being properly informed about how ‘real’ this really is.

Jen is personally not to blame – MC’s handling of this has been poor.

Lisa CoxLisa Coxhttp://www.lisacoxpresents.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2042413869472011551.post-2501708063427540652010-01-11T19:09:39.830+11:002010-01-11T19:09:39.830+11:00The WHOLE exercise was just a publicity stunt by M...The WHOLE exercise was just a publicity stunt by Marie Claire and Jennifer Hawkins, and they are shamelessly pretending to promote positive body image as an excuse to get attention. Think of how many people will buy Marie Claire this month! And Jen Hawkins has not had this much exposure since she won Miss universe.

If Marie Claire REALLY wanted to send out a positive message about body image, they should have featured everyday women with normal bodies, NOT Miss universe.

This has really put me off buying Marie Claire...it's fine to feature Jen Hawkins naked, she looks beautiful, but be honest about your reasons and don't exploit an issue that really effects so many women...it's irresponsible, i expected more from Marie Claire...Jo85noreply@blogger.com
