Edited by Canadian stylist Leith Clark, Lula is a title cherished by those whose own aesthetic resonates with her own: playful, eclectic and nostalgic, with a preference for the likes of Rodarte and Chanel and anything that reminds her of childhood (Alice in Wonderland, anyone?). Light on words and heavy on imagery (it's edited by a stylist, not a journalist, after all), making it a sort of modern-day fairytale picture book, new GWAS guest contributor Natalie Amat takes a trip via the latest issue…Lula is all about inspiration. Using more pictures than words to capture the spirit of an issue, the simple phrase “starry, starry, starry” is this edition's theme. In the world of Lula, interviews with creative women working in the arts take precedence where other magazines get their celebrity fill. However, not all the women are obscure finds; Lula still relies on a crop of credibly cool “It girls” for good measure (cue Lou Dillon, Karl Lagerfeld muse Amanda Harlech and Clemence Poesy), while well-known models like Ali Michael, adored actress Zooey Deschanel and musicians like Effi Briest star in its whimsical fashion shoots.

THE GLOSSARY
The good bits: “Don’t Let Me be Misunderstood”, a homage to the girls of film and stories who dare to be different (Wednesday Addams, Margot Tenenbaum and Violet Baudelaire) featuring gorgeous illustrations by Jonas Lofgren/Bildmekanik; “Things to Make and Do”, a feature on scrapbooking for pleasure with glimpses into the visual journals of creatives Peter Beard, Alison Mosshart, Shona Heath and Clemence Posey; interviews with Melissa Coker of Wren, actresses Jane Adams and Jodelle Ferland, and Victoria Legrand of musical duo Beach House, whose sound Rodarte describes as “a glass box filled with sand, metal, rain and thunder” (Lula loves Rodarte); and “Lula Goes to Tokyo”, a page of Polaroids.
Blink and skip it: Don’t you dare! Lula is to be relished.
Pretty pages: The “Gothic Fairytale” looks in ‘I See Darkness’; 60s shoot “Clickety Clack”; the YSL tribute ‘Elegant Transaction’; ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ (think ripped stockings and black lace);
‘Tender to the Blues’, a vintage inspired snapshot of relaxed Mod style peppered with fur coats, bathing caps, headwraps and fishnet stockings; and ‘Dreams of Tomorrow’, a beauty shoot shot in soft monochrome featuring Bambi lashes and wildflowers.Glossy posse: Zac Posen, Zooey Deschanel, Lou Dillon, Amanda Harlech, Clemence Poesy…
